Like the Model T Ford, things have changed greatly since the old days. The word used to mean learning ‘plum in the mouth’ Received Pronunciation. This is no longer the case.
Sound both clear and well-spoken
Today’s professional approach is all about clarity and/or ‘softening’ any unwanted strong vowels. Our students have a mix of practical and cosmetic reasons for making the change.
Standard Neutral English gives clarity
The Standard Neutral English model gives the clearest possible pronunciation of spoken English. Your speech will be judged ‘good’ and be understood first time anywhere in the world.
Must you lose your regional accent?
No. You get to choose how much of this you change. As a general rule, accent is conveyed in the vowel sounds. If others around you share your accent, they will have no problem understanding your vowels.
On the other hand, clarity is created mainly by the consonant sounds. Your course will cover these in depth. If clarity is your only goal, simply focus your attention on just these sounds.
Forget general courses that give all students the same speech sounds to study. Every accent has a unique set of consonant and vowel differences. Why waste time studying sounds you don’t need to change.
